Some will say it's a security feature, but I say it's just security through obscurity (which I find mostly useless).Īll it does is cause more headache among those of us who have to work with the servers, without causing much of any real extra work for someone trying to penetrate your systems (they'll be able to figure out what the server does by what ports it's listening on, which is far more useful information than the name anyway). There's no really good reason to use obfuscated names or arbitrary names. Other people have to be able to make quick sense of the network, which is why you see standard naming schemes that follow the descriptive format.ĭescriptive names. What it does do is make it unclear if you have to glance at a diagram really quick when trying to recover from a disaster. So the security aspect of names does nothing IMHO. For instance, "Hulk" might be your firewall, while "Batman" and "Robin" could be your two node Hyper-V cluster. Calling the server "Patty" or "Selma" or whatever action hero you like, does little to nothing other than showing how you prioritize the server. Savvy hackers know what a DNS or LDAP server speaks. They are going to be looking at packet payloads and communication ports. As has been pointed out, maybe it will keep a low skill hacker (script kiddie) from getting your servers but a skilled hacker isn't going to rely on DNS names. The likeliness of a hacker knowing each app inside and out is remote. App servers with Arbitrary names are much harder to find. Of course any skilled hack can easily find DCs and file servers. ![]() You are freaking awesome mate, glad to have you as a friend and also glad we were able to make this pack together. Is using arbitrary names (planets, rocks, superheros, etc.) that effective against security threats?Īrbitrary names help protect servers.
